本欄は、読者の皆様と、 日本語と英語について、また日本文化と英語圏文化について、自由に、楽しく会話したいと願うものです。 筆者は、30代の半ばに、英国のパブのような店を持ちたいと思いました。 KOJI'S KOZY KORNERの店は実現しませんでしたが、30数年後にバーチャルの形を持てることになりました。 読者諸兄姉から話題を頂戴して出来る限りお答えしたり、筆者からの質問に対してお答えや参考情報を提供して いただいたりして、その過程で話の花を咲かせたいと思う次第です。どうぞよろしくお願い申し上げます。 この第1回では、皆様に筆者からのお尋ねをさせていただきたいと存じます。 昭和30年代に結婚した姉には孫娘が2人と孫息子が2人、妹には孫息子が1人生まれました。 筆者にとっては、姉妹の孫は、英語で言えばgrandnephewsとgrandniecesです。 ふと気が付いて、これらを日本語で何と言うか疑問を抱きました。彼らと彼女らから見れば、筆者はgranduncleであり、 日本語では大伯父/大叔父になります。英和辞典を引いてみると、grandnephewは「甥[姪]の息子、兄弟[姉妹]の孫息子」、 grandnieceは「甥[姪]の娘、兄弟[姉妹]の孫娘」と説明されているだけで、該当する単語は載っていません。 周囲の者に訊いても誰も答えを知りませんでした。ご承知のとおり、英語には兄と弟、姉と妹、伯父と叔父、 それぞれを区別する単語は存在しません。それなのに日本語には何故grandnephewとgrandnieceに対応する単語が無いのでしょうか。 どなたかご教示賜れば幸いです。
英語のbrotherに兄と弟の区別が無いという点での筆者の経験を申し上げます。 20歳の大学生のとき頻繁に出入りしていた横浜の米国海軍基地で、6歳年長の女性軍属(中尉待遇のcivilian)が筆者に英語を教えてくれました。 彼女には7歳と10歳年長の兄2人がいるとのことでした。或る日の会話で、 彼女が "My little brother was an airline pilot, but he's now a Lockheed test pilot" と言うので、変だなと思って、聞き返しました。 そのlittle brotherとは、「下のお兄ちゃん」のことで、もう1人はbig brotherでした。

Did everyone see the Scotsmans statement today that top dental consultants in Scotland are making an astounding £120 k a year?? I have to look into that line of work, evidently they're doing something right! oh and, I had to have a pity party for the very poor associate dentists - they earn a mere £60-70k!
I came to be browsing in the Scotsman today that Principle Dental surgeons are earning close to £120k per annum . . . that sure does sound like a ton of money nowadays. My emotions went out to the associates dentists (lower down the pecking order) whom just collect roughly £70k typically...all together now, ahhhhh
I noticed that today it's been publicised that Dental surgeons in Scotland generate an average of £119k per annum! That is for the 'principle' dental professional though...the lowly 'associates' are only on £67k average! I am in the completely wrong line of employment...

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.
You wouldnt believe how long ive been searching for something like this. Scrolled through 8 pages of Yahoo results couldnt find diddly squat. First page of bing. There you are!.... Gotta start using that more often
